The Chicago Sun-Times reports Sunday that 48 of the 53 so-called Safe Passage routes are within roughly a block of those in the Illinois State Police sex offender registry.
About 2,700 sex offenders are registered in Chicago.
Chicago police spokesman Adam Collins says each route proposed by Chicago Public Schools was reviewed. He says officers visited each sec offender along a route to ensure they were in compliance with the law.
The district outlined the routes after officials closed dozens of schools to narrow a budget gap. Parents have expressed concerns about safety, such as children potentially crossing gang lines.
