With Congress locked up with the government shutdown and debt ceiling, it is not likely they will pass a new farm bill.
That could mean sharply higher prices for milk, cheese and butter.
If a new bill isn't signed into law by January 1st, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will revert back to 1949 laws, forcing the government to pay more.
Congress faced similar circumstances in the last budget stalemate.
