October 18, 2013

Hillcrest High School opened its doors in February, 1967. Hillcrest is one of four schools in the Bremen High School District 228. Hillcrest High School has a current population of 1,100 students that come from Country Club Hills, Hazel Crest and Markham. The school's mascot is the Hawk. The school colors are Columbia blue, navy blue and white.

We offer regular, honors and advanced placement courses. The school boasts a strong curriculum program offering challenging core classes in math, science, English and social studies. In addition we have strong business, industrial technology and family & consumer science departments. Our world language and physical education departments are outstanding as well. And lastly, our fine arts program is second to none. We have award winning art, band and choral programs. The choir is under the direction of Ms. Bonnie Mootry and the art program is under the direction of Ms. Jamilah Mason. The Hillcrest band has had a long tradition of success in its concert, marching and jazz bands, earning numerous accolades and awards, as well as boasting of its numerous professional musicians and music educators. Under the current director, Mrs. Valeaka Freeman, the Hillcrest High school band continues this tradition of hard work, success and development in music education. We also sponsor over 40 different extracurricular clubs and activities for students to participate in. We try to offer something for everyone.

Our athletic programs are strong as well. We have won many Illinois High School Association state titles in both girls and boys basketball as well as track and field. Tonight's homecoming game will be played against the Rams of Reavis High School. The sophomores play at 4:45PM and the varsity game will begin at 7:00PM. Varsity football graduating seniors will be honored during our last game of the season on seniors' honors night during next Friday's game against Tinley Park High School.

Marquis Cole currently with the New England Patriots and Danny Clark (former NFL Player and sports commentator) are graduates of Hillcrest High School. Speaking of alumni, Hillcrest has a rich and strong history of alumni. The all class alumni association hosts an annual reunion in July on the school grounds. Many prominent alumni have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, news anchors, talk show hosts, professional athletes and actors to name a few.

This week we have been celebrating homecoming. Besides the dance on Saturday night, the highlight of Homecoming includes a performance with the current band members and more than 50 alumni returning tonight to participate in the half time show. Along with the homecoming activities - October has been a busy month at Hillcrest. Other events have been celebrated or acknowledged at the school and include:

National Teen Read Week
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
