Halloween costumes: TV shows in, politics out

October 21, 2013 (CHICAGO)

At Fantasy Costumes on North Milwaukee Avenue they have over a million items in stock. So whatever your fiendish mind can come up with, they have the crazy answer. And sales are booming.

"Real big right now are super hero costumes for great group themes. A lot of pirates ... A lot of Draculas, vampires," Chuck Giovenco, manager of Fantasy Costumes, said. "The usual suspects. That is correct."

In some ways there's really nothing new on the fright scene. A lot of the same old faces. But what's interesting is the emergence of the characters from those blockbuster TV series.

"One of them that's going really is the Breaking Bad scene ... Ah, with the hazmat suit and the gas mask," Giovenco said.

Fantasy Costumes has more than 10,000 masks- for sale for just a few bucks, or more than a hundred. Some of the most popular costumes come from the phenomenon of "Duck Dynasty."

One thing that's not selling: politics. "The political masks are not selling this year. I think people are just fed up with what's going on and they're not finding it funny," Giovenco said.
