Citgo ordered to investigate Lemont refinery fire

November 8, 2013 (LEMONT, Ill.)

A fire broke out there on October 23 as maintenance was being performed on a pump.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow say they are taking legal action to ensure that Citgo takes all necessary steps to prevent dangerous equipment malfunctions.

In addition, Citgo must provide recommended corrective actions and a work plan for approval by the Illinois EPA.

Citgo responded on Friday in a written statement: "CITGO Petroleum Corporation entered into an Agreed Interim Order today with the Will County State's Attorney, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois Attorney General's Office to take certain actions following the October 23rd fire at the CITGO Lemont Refinery. CITGO has taken all necessary and appropriate steps to respond to this incident and will implement the appropriate corrective actions once our Incident Investigation is completed. The safety of our employees, the community and the environment is not only our top priority; it is our single most important core value. CITGO understands and appreciates the State's responsibility to ensure all businesses operate with the same priorities and we have and will continue to cooperate fully to this end."
