November 8, 2013 (CHICAGO)

The "Unwrap Chicago: Eat, Drink and Buy Local" campaign kicked off Friday.

the program encourages residents to spend one dollar a day or $365 annually to independent, locally-owned businesses.

"When Chicagoan's spend money locally at the local small businesses that money is then recirculated to the local community," said 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman. "It allows people to work there, to live in a community. It allows for them to spend money at other businesses and it self sustains."

More than 39 Chicago neighborhoods and chambers of commerce are participating in the city-wide effort.
