New statin guidelines concentrate on heart attack, stroke risk

November 12, 2013

Doctors used to focus on the amount of cholesterol a patient had when deciding whether to recommend statins but, now doctors are being told to concentrate primarily on the patient's risk of heart attack and stroke.

The new guidelines come from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology and could double the number of patients taking statins.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States.
