Can you imagine it's Friday night after a long week of working, you're looking forward to the weekend, you are just inches from leaving the office and then -- you get stuck. Well, that's what happened for these county employees for nearly two hours, so what did they do? How about a game of candy crush.
"Everybody was calm, we played games on our phone," said Sheila Atkins, elevator passenger.
Sheila Atkins says that's what she and 8 of her fellow passengers did to pass the time while they were stuck in the center elevator for nearly two hours at the county building on 69 West Washington.
Atkins says she boarded the elevator on the 30th floor where she works in the office of planning and policy.
"Once we got down to the first, it wouldn't open. We kept pressing the button, we couldn't get out of the elevator," said Atkins.
Atkins says they were in constant contact with emergency workers and building management before rescuers were able to get to them.
"The elevator repairmen arrived and did some work on the elevator, repaired the jump shaft and re-lowered it down," said Chief Michael Fox, special operations.
Fox says all of the passengers were checked by paramedics at the scene but refused to be transported to the hospital.
Those stuck inside the elevator got very familiar with one another in such close confinement.
"I don't think we expected to be there so long, that was the only downside with time passing," said Atkins.
Atkins says she now has some new friends after that bonding experience.
Early reports indicated a problem with an electrical panel.
Ten years ago, six people were killed in a fire at that same location. However, the passengers we spoke with said it didn't come up or even cross their minds.
