Mayor fires back at French tourist warning about Chicago South, West sides

November 19, 2013 (CHICAGO)

The French government has told its citizens visiting Chicago to stay away from the West Side and from the South Side below 59th Street. But the mayor says if tourists do stay away from those areas, it's their loss.

"We are the most American of American cities. And if people didn't go to the West Side, they wouldn't see Garfield Park. If people didn't come to the South Side, they won't see a work by Theaster Gates. They won't see in Pullman Park what could be soon a national designation as a park," Emanuel said.

The mayor says tourism in Chicago is growing and that the city has moved from tenth in the country in tourism to ninth.
