Toys R Us guide connects shoppers with gifts for disabled kids

November 23, 2013 (CHICAGO)

For 20 years, Toys R Us has been helping with a toy guide for differently-abled kids.

Every year the National Lekotek Center in Chicago evaluates over 1,000 toys, 250, of which, are for the Toys R Us toys guide.

Ellen Metrick is the director of Industry Relations at Toys R Us and says about 100 toys make it into the toy guide.

And every year, they select the hottest toys by age and abilities. These are the 2013 selections:
Lamaze Frank the Hanky Whale
Magic Move Electric Wand
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pop-up pizza play

The number of children diagnosed with a disability keeps growing.

''The statistics now are 1 in 20 kids have a disability, and if you add in learning disabilities and undiagnosed delays, you're going down to 1 in 5 that has a special need,'' said Metrick.

''About one fifth of the US population has at least one child that has a disability,'' she said.

Toys R Us toy guide for differently-abled kids makes it easier to find the right toys for a child with a disability. The prices range from $5 - $100.

The toy guide is available at all Toys R Us stores and can also be found online:
