A San Francisco woman was carrying her two adult felines in a carrier near Pier 14 on the Embarcadero around 4:20 p.m. when a male suspect approached her, San Francisco Animal Care and Control Capt. Le-Ellis Brown said.
The suspect grabbed all of the woman's belongings that she was carrying -- including the cat carrier, which was attached to her backpack -- and threw everything into the Bay.
Both cats died in the incident, Brown said.
Animal control personnel and fire crews responded and retrieved the woman's property from the water, including the carrier, Brown said.
The suspect is described as a white male standing about 6 feet tall. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and possibly had a skateboard.
Brown is hoping to get more information about the suspect in follow-up interviews with the victim.
"The owner was so distraught last night that we weren't really able to talk to her," he said this afternoon.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the case is asked to call animal care Officer Johnny Hilton at (415) 554-9400.
