Father Michael Pfleger led a demonstration at the offices of the Amalgamated Transit Union. Critics say the union's leader refuses to continue the program that helps 65 workers.
"What kind of message do you send out here to Chicago to some someone coming out of the joint, that sudden says I wanna do the right thing, and all we're doing is firing them, laying them off?" said Pfleger.
"I don't know if there's something that can be worked out, or not worked out, regarding this program, and I can't answer that in the media and I cannot answer it with people who don't represent the CTA," said Robert Kelly, president, ATU Local 308.
Kelly says it's been months since the CTA has talked to him about renewing the program.
He says CTA president Forrest Claypool should give him a call.
The CTA says it applauds Father Pfleger's leadership on this issue.
