AARP offers tips to keep cost of owning a pet down

December 26, 2013

A recent survey by Coupon Cabin found 15 percent of pet owners spend more than $100 per month on their animals.

The AARP is offering several tips to trim those bills.

One is to feed your pet the right amount of food. Overfeeding is expensive and unhealthy.

Medicine is also very expensive, as most pets don't have prescription plans. You can ask your vet about generic drugs for dogs and cats.

And there is one cheap way to keep your pet healthy: use a leash. One veterinarian tells AARP that 60 to 70 percent of all emergency room visits could have been prevented if owners used leashes more often.
