Chicago parents warn of potential sledding dangers after daughter injured in accident

January 1, 2014 (CHICAGO)

Samantha Cooney, 5, and a friend were on a toboggan that veered off course and crashed into a woman. Samantha's forehead struck the woman's knee.

When her father saw the bruise on Samantha's head, he rushed her to the emergency room. The accident has taught the Cooneys about sledding safety.

"Having a helmet would have been the smart thing to do. Another thing we learned was she's five, so kids five and younger should have a parent ride with them," said Laura Cooney, mother.

Doctors don't think Samantha had suffered a concussion. They recommended rest and some pain medicine.
