The incident involving an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train happened about 3:30 p.m. near Forest Avenue in Downers Grove, railway spokesman Andy Williams said.
The train hit a passenger vehicle stopped on the tracks, Downers Grove Deputy Police Chief Bill Budds said. The man driving the vehicle was the only person inside, and made it out of the vehicle by the time emergency officials arrived.
He was not hurt, Budds said. It was not yet clear why the vehicle was stopped on the tracks.
"We're working with BNSF to have that [vehicle] removed and to get train traffic back to normal," Budds said. He estimated the vehicle would be removed before 5 p.m.
That grade-level intersection is equipped with lights and crossing guards, Williams said.
No Metra trains were involved, but all inbound and outbound tracks were temporarily blocked, Metra spokeswoman Carolyn Tucker said.
The commuter trains were halted for about an hour, but are moving again with delays between 15 and 70 minutes, according to Metra's website. Two inbound trains from Aurora, Nos. 1274 and 1276 have been canceled.
