Navy helicopter crashes off Virginia coast with 5 on board

A U.S. Navy helicopter with five people on board crashed off the coast of Norfolk, Va., Wednesday, a Navy spokesperson confirmed for ABC News.

The CH-53 E helicopter went down at approximately 10:30 a.m. carrying five personnel. The accident scene is 12 miles off the coast of Fort Story and about 18 miles from Virginia Beach.

Petty Officer David Weydert said there was no immediate word on any casualties. Search and rescue efforts by Navy and Coast Guard crews were underway.

Weydert said two Coast Guard vessels were responding to the crash site, and one was within 3 miles of where the helicopter went down.

The Navy did not have any immediate word on the crash.
