Thursday's deadly fire in Hammond, Indiana underscores some safety tips to keep in mind if you use a space heater in your home.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, only use a space heater that has a "U-L" certification tag on it.

Never plug your space heater into an extension cord because the cord could overheat and burn.

Always keep the space heater at least three feet away from other items in the home, especially bedding and curtains.

And ever leave children unattended near a space heater.
