1: The number of times Martin Luther King Jr. changed his name. He was originally named Michael King after his father, but the pair changed their names to Martin Luther King Sr. and Jr. after a trip to Germany in 1931. Michael King Jr. was two years old at the time.

2: The number of attempts on King's life. On his book tour for "Stride Toward Freedom," King was approached by Izola Ware Curry, who asked him if he was in fact Martin Luther King Jr. He replied yes, then she stabbed him with a letter opener in the chest.
39: King's age when he was assassinated. (However, one of the doctors noted that he had the "heart of a 60-year-old.")
2: The number of people who died at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on April 4, 1968. Lorraine Bailey, the wife of the motel owner, died of a heart attack after King was shot.
2000: The first year all 50 states observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The last states to join were Arizona, New Hampshire and Utah.
