Martin Luther King by the numbers: Facts about the civil rights icon

1: The number of times Martin Luther King Jr. changed his name. He was originally named Michael King after his father, but the pair changed their names to Martin Luther King Sr. and Jr. after a trip to Germany in 1931. Michael King Jr. was two years old at the time.

2: The number of grades Martin Luther King Jr. skipped in high school (9th and 11th).

15: The age of Martin Luther King when he entered Morehouse College. He graduated with a Bachelors degree in sociology at age 19.

35: Martin Luther King's age when he became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. (His record later fell.)

1971: The year King won a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for "Why I opposed the war in Vietnam."

700+: The number of streets named after MLK. There is one in almost every major city.

29: The number of times King was jailed.

2: The number of attempts on King's life. On his book tour for "Stride Toward Freedom," King was approached by Izola Ware Curry, who asked him if he was in fact Martin Luther King Jr. He replied yes, then she stabbed him with a letter opener in the chest.

39: King's age when he was assassinated. (However, one of the doctors noted that he had the "heart of a 60-year-old.")

2: The number of people who died at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on April 4, 1968. Lorraine Bailey, the wife of the motel owner, died of a heart attack after King was shot.

2000: The first year all 50 states observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The last states to join were Arizona, New Hampshire and Utah.
