According to police, Bensenville officers responded to Sam's Tobacco and Food Mart in the 200-block of West Irving Park Road at approximately 6 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report about a possible armed robbery with a shooting. The store clerk, who police identified on Monday as 36-year-old Hussein Saghir, was shot and later died.
Bensenville police released surveillance video from the store on Monday afternoon. In the video, which can be graphic at times, the subject is seen firing a gun, though it is not the shot that fatally wounded Saghir.
"The two subjects were trying to force them to return back into the store, and at one point, one of the subjects pulled out a handgun and fired a shot," said Chief Frank Kosman, Bensenville Police Department.
During a brief struggle, police say the suspect then fired the shot that fatally wounded Saghir. When they arrived, authorities found the clerk outside in front of the store wounded and bleeding.
Saghir was taked to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead later.
Police hope that the video, though disturbing, will help identify the killer. He is described as wearing an Abercrombie & Fitch maroon hoodie, and True Religion blue jeans.
Some people who work nearby said the tobacco shop had a break in just a few months ago. Police do not believe the two incidents are related.
"I know that he did put cameras in the store after that. So, I am just hoping that whoever did it was caught on camera," said Stephanie Penge, who works next door.
The victim's identity was not released immediately. Customers said they hoped it was not the store owner, who is known to be very kind. Those speaking with Eyewitness News said he is the type of person who would let customers pay him back if they didn't have enough money.
No one is in custody.
Police continued to guard the crime scene Monday but were saying very little about the case. The Bensenville Police Department is working with the DuPage County Major Crime Task Force and did not return calls Monday.
