Missing Wisconsin newborn search continues; Kayden Powell, 5 days, missing from Beloit bassinette

February 6, 2014 (BELOIT, Wis.)

Five-day-old Kayden Powell was reported missing from the bassinette in his family's Beloit, Wisconsin home by his 18-year-old mother, who had awakened at 4:30 Thursday morning to check on him.

In cases such as this, for authorities, the first few hours are critical. Police have questioned several people staying in the home and one relative who left the house a few hours before the baby was reported missing.

Authorities have searched dumpsters in the area of the home, but they have found no trace of the 5-day-old baby boy that's 20 inches long, 6 lbs., and has brown hair and brown eyes.

The most intriguing clue wasn't in Beloit or even in Wisconsin; a relative of one of the baby's aunts was arrested at a convenience store along I-80 in Iowa.

Kristin Smith is being held Thursday night on an outstanding fraud warrant from Texas, but authorities say she was at the Beloit home early Thursday morning at about the time the baby was last seen.

Without explanation, she left at 1:30 a.m. to drive back to Colorado where she lives, but the baby hasn't been found, which has left relatives in agony.

Police say they found baby clothes in the aunt's car but not the baby. FBI Agents are on the way to Iowa to question Smith.
