Family and friends gather to cheer on a figure skater and Chicago area native going for the gold in Sochi.

A viewing party was held this morning to watch Jason Brown compete in the men's free skate competition.

Family and friends say Brown always puts everything he has into his performances and were so proud of his performance this morning.

"Jason, you did great, we're absolutely proud of you, just keep going the way you are," said grandfather Marvin Bernstein.

"He's so vivacious and you see it, shines through on his face and he's just so happy. And he himself is just so, 'I can't believe I'm here,' and he's truly like that. His performance was great," Jane Zimbler.

Brown's family is leaving Monday for Sochi to cheer him during the rest of the Olympic Games.
