Wallington firefighter killed in blaze laid to rest

WALLINGTON, N.J.

Services took place for Gregory Barnas in Wallington Friday. The funeral began with a solemn procession from the funeral home to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

The 57-year-old died after he fell from the roof while working to put out a fire at a restaurant last Friday.

Barnas was a 40-year volunteer of the Bergen County town's fire department and a 29-year veteran of the Jersey City Fire Department, where he was a captain.

Firefighters from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania attended his viewing on Thursday.

Meantime, flags flew at half-staff in Barnas' honor.

Sources tell Eyewitness News Barnas fell and went into cardiac arrest.

Barnas started his work with the Wallington Fire Department as a junior firefighter in 1972.

"It's a tragic loss for our fire department, words just can't even come to mind for it," said friend and fellow firefighter Mark Tomko.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says Barnas' sons are both firefighters who were at the scene of the fire when their father fell.

Molinelli says the fire is being investigated but that it does not appear suspicious.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
