Gary Shinnamon turns self in after baby dies in hit-and-run crash in Indianapolis

March 7, 2014 (INDIANAPOLIS)

The boy has been identified as Yeshua Shafford and police say the impact of the crash threw the little boy from the car seat he was strapped into and out of his family's compact car.

The 7-month-old was found near a guardrail and was rushed to a local hospital where he later died. The crash happened in Indianapolis near the intersection of west 38th Street and Commercial Drive at the exit off I-65 late Tuesday night.

The car that hit the family vehicle was a black Dodge. Witnesses told police the car had been driving recklessly before the crash. Its driver and passenger were both seen running away from the accident scene.

Police have since arrested Gary Shinnamon, 36, of Indianapolis who turned himself in to police Thursday afternoon. Shinnamon has been charged with failure to stop at an accident resulting in death and driving with a suspended license.

The family was in the process of moving to Indianapolis from Chicago and his parents are back now in Chicago to plan the little boy's funeral.
