Man, 29, dead after ejected from Ford Explorer SUV on I-57

March 8, 2014 (CHICAGO)

About 1:30 a.m., the 29-year-old driving a 2000 Ford Explorer lost control while heading northbound "at a high rate of speed" on I-57 near 99th Street, Illinois State Police said.

The driver, who was the only person inside the vehicle, veered right, causing the SUV to hit the right side guard rail and roll over, police said. He was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the driver's seat, police said.

Jason West, of the 12000 block of South Emerald Avenue, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 2:20 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

An autopsy performed Saturday revealed West died of multiple injuries he suffered in the crash and his death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner's office said.

At least part of northbound I-57 near 99th Street was closed while police investigated the crash, but lanes were reopened at 4:50 a.m., police said.
