The primary election is one week away. On Monday night, two Republican candidates in the race for state treasurer squared off in a forum.

State Representative Tom Cross faces DuPage County Auditor Bob Grogan in the GOP primary. Both men hope to win the seat now held by Treasurer Dan Rutherford, who's running for governor.

Cross and Grogan disagree on how to enforce balancing the state's budget.

"I think the treasurer's office outta be engaged in one, making the general assembly balances the budget. And in the event they don't balance the budget, the treasurer can come along and enforce the constitution," said Rep. Cross.

"The treasurer's office role is not to play pretend that you're the attorney general. If we want people to get going to court, we should elect a different attorney general to enforce those things," said Grogan.

Whoever wins the primary faces Democrat Mike Frerichs, who is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.
