Coast Guard cutter Mobile Bay goes to work on Lake Michigan

March 11, 2014

The crew of the Coast Guard cutter Mobile Bay carved a path through the ice.

The cutter had the job of breaking through near-record thick ice in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., so ships can start moving after a winter of hibernation.

The Great Lakes have seen record amounts of ice this winter. Over the weekend, the ice coverage hit 93-percent. Warm temperatures yesterday helped melt some of that, but not much.
