Tomohiro Hirayama, his wife, Sachiyo, and 16-year-old son, Yuki, were killed in a crash. A 9-year-old girl survived.
On Monday night, Arizona authorities said a car being chased by police struck the family's vehicle.
Yuki was a sophomore at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. He transferred into the school at the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, according to the school. Stevenson High School made counselors available to students.
The Hirayama family is from Japan, and had moved to the area because of a job opportunity. They have no close relatives living in the U.S., a spokesman said.
Other family members are on their way from Japan to Phoenix.
