A man is in the hospital following a shooting in northwest Fresno, California.

Police said around 1 a.m. on Friday, 46-year-old Henry Bess confronted a man and his girlfriend at a gas station at Shaw and Brawley. They said Bess initiated a fight with the couple, then he reached for a gun in his waistband.

"They're wrestling over the gun. As they rolled over, a shot goes off and the victim believes that's the shot that struck the suspect in the crotch," said Lt. Joe Gomez, Fresno Police Department.

Police say another shot went off, but it didn't hit anyone.

Authorities say Bess ended up leaving the area on his bike, but was found about a block away. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and is expected to survive.

No one else was injured in the incident.
