Christine Benz's Tips For Retirement:
Strategy 1:
Tune out the day-to-day market noise. Focus on what you can control: watch investment-related and tax costs like a hawk. Pay attention to coming up with a sensible stock/ bond/ cash mix.

Strategy 2:
Don't be afraid to take risk by holding some stocks.
The 3% yield you might earn on bonds today is barely going to beat the inflation rate, so you need to hold stocks as well as bonds and cash.

Strategy 3:
Consider non-investment levers to help make your money last.
Consider working longer (even part-time) and delaying Social Security benefits to boost your payout.

Strategy 4:
Get help.
Find a financial advisor or enlist the help of an adult child or trusted friend to help vet your decisions and provide backup in case something should happen to you. Scrupulously document what you're doing.

Strategy 5:
Keep your investment plan simple.
Don't clutter things up with narrowly focused, overly risky investments.
