PHOTOS: LSD closed by suspicious package
The package was discovered around Lawrence in the Uptown neighborhood around 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
Traffic was shut down in both directions from Wilson to Foster while police used bomb-sniffing dogs and a robotic device to investigate the package in the northbound lanes. Police removed the item and determined the scene was safe around 3 p.m.
Police said Wednesday afternoon that the suspicious item ended up being a sleeping bag. Residents say the area of Lawrence near Lake Shore Drive has a large homeless population.
"I think it was overreaction, it was poor judgement. Again, there's a lot of homeless people in this area, there's stuff left here all the time," said Karen Santor, who lives nearby.
Traffic was backed up for several miles in the Uptown neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, but was moving in time for the evening commute.
