The 13th annual Cook County Peace Officers Memorial was held in suburban Lyons. The fallen officers served with more than 65 federal, state, county and municipal agencies.
Among those honored were Illinois State Trooper James Sauter and Cook County Sheriff's Investigator Cuauhtemoc Estrada.
Fellow officers spoke first about Sauter, and then Estrada.
Estrada was killed while trying to stop a robbery outside a family gathering. Sauter was struck and killed on the Tri-State Tollway.
