CHICAGO (WLS) -- Does the color of your car impact insurance rates? It does not, but 42 percent of Americans think it does.

The company Insurance Quotes says more than half of those who believe the myth are millennials.

Another misconception: car insurance does not replace items stolen from your vehicle, even though 34 percent of those surveyed believe it does.

Those items are covered by homeowners and renters insurance.

Many Americans also do not realize that insurance will pay for repairs even if the accident is your fault.

The study suggests many car owners need to do their homework on auto insurance.
