CHICAGO (WLS) -- Preorders started Friday for the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and the ABC7 Eyewitness News I-Team has ways your old phone can save you money on the new technology.
Your device may feel dated with the debut of Apple's latest iPhone, but experts say it's probably still in high demand and that could mean money in your pocket. The I-Team found the best ways to cash in.
If you think your older model iPhone is worthless, think again.
"I think I would feel good with $149, it is in pretty good shape," said consumer Josh Jones.
Everywhere you look there are opportunities to get money for some phones.
"I'm looking to at least get $99 for the phone," James Morgan said.
Smart phone and app specialist Brad Spirrison says you can also go to the Apple Store, but you'll get the most money for your for your older, working, phone by going to your carrier.
"The carriers are in an environment where they are trying to get your business," he said.
He says Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T all have buyback programs where you may get anywhere from $100-300 credit for an iPhone 4s, 5 or 5s, in good condition.
"These phones are popular when we take them back," said AT&T's Brandon Robinson. "Some of our efforts have gone to funds for soldiers so the phones will be recycled and the phones will be used for soldiers overseas."
AT&T managers say if you get one of those $300 credits and you're eligible to get the $199 contract renewal price on an iPhone 6, you can end up with a $100 dollar profit towards your bill.
Spirrison says if you just want the cash your second best option is online. Several websites will buy your phone like Gazelle, Usell and Ecoatm.
"All of these are known to be very reliable, but I would say with anything particular with websites do you best to do your own research," Spirrison said.
And before turning your phone in, make sure you wipe it by erasing the content and settings.
In May, the ITeam showed how special software could easily recover items like pictures and other data, even after the items were deleted.
Walmart and Target also have phone buyback programs. In many cases, you can also get cash or credit for other non-apple smartphones. Wireless salespeople say there is a huge demand.
