NILES, Ill. (WLS) -- The Niles Police Department is warning the community of a recent phone-based scam in the area in which callers and autocalls pose as Com-Ed in voicemails about overdue payments.

The police say that they received a complaint from an intended victim who received a message that appeared to come from Com-Ed notifying him that a payment was overdue and instructed him to call back to prevent loss of service. The intended victim contacted Con-Ed to confirm there was a payment issue and learned the voicemail was false.

Nile Police remind the community never to make a payment to someone you do not know, and to always verify information by contacting your service provider or credit card company by calling the phone number provided on your bill or on the back of your credit card. Do not call the number that is provided by an automated message.
