CHICAGO (WLS) -- A new law aims to give ex-offenders help in getting a fresh start in finding a job.

Governor Pat Quinn signed the legislation that prevents criminal background checks until after an applicant is deemed qualified for a job and chosen for an interview.

This law does not apply to certain jobs in here employers must exclude applicants with criminal histories.

The new law takes effect January 1.
