CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Chicago police officer fired at a suspect in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood Saturday morning, police said.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 8100-block of South Maryland Avenue at about 4:33 a.m., police said.

Police said a 27-year-old man broke into the residence of a former girlfriend and confronted her and a 25-year-old man with her. The suspect struck the woman in the face with his hand and shot the 25-year-old man in both arms, police said.

After officers arrived on the scene, the suspect was seen leaving the apartment and displayed a weapon. An officer fired at the suspect, but did not hit the suspect, police said.

The suspect attempted to flee, but was soon apprehended by police and a weapon was recovered from the scene, police said. Charges against him are pending.

The wounded man was transported to Christ Hospital in serious condition. The woman refused medical treatment at the scene.
