CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. (WLS) -- A Chicago Heights first grader was suspended from school for something she said to two boys who were teasing her. Her mother says the zero-tolerance policy went too far.

"I said I was going to kill them," Anaja Thompson, 6, said.

Her mom says it was all innocent - first graders teasing one another - and that the two boys said Anaja had a crush on another student.

"She asked them to leave her alone. They did not leave her alone, so she said she was going to kill them," said Anjahnee Thompson, Anaja's mother.

But a teacher didn't find it funny.

"He said that he was going to write me up," Anaja said.

Her mom says administrators at Sandridge Elementary threatened to expel Anaja before suspending her for 10 days. A discipline report says the school would even file a police report.

"You don't have to have a Ph.D. to know she's 6 years old. She's a child. She's just getting her teeth in," said Renee Thompson, Anaja's grandmother.

"She doesn't know how to kill nobody. She can't even cut her own food," said Anjahnee Thompson.

Superintendent Thomas Smyth told us he couldn't comment on a case of student discipline but said the district, as a policy, does not allow threatening language in school.

The suspension was reduced to three days, but that discipline report could stay in her school file.
