Safe Chicago Coalition provides school supplies in Rogers Park

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Keeping kids and families safe is the focus of the Safe Chicago Coalition and children received backpacks filled with school supplies at an event Saturday in Rogers Park.

They also had a chance to check out Safety Smart, a program that will be in dozens of classrooms this fall.

It was created by Underwriter's Laboratory and Disney, the parent company of ABC7.

It encourages children to practice safe, healthy and environmentally responsible behaviors.

The goal of all this is for Chicago to be designated as a safe community by the national safety council.
