Benjamin Perez Memorial Scholarship awarded in honor of fallen Chicago police officer

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A fallen Chicago police officer was remembered by helping insure a bright future for a high school student.

Brother Rice sophomore Christopher Murphy received the Benjamin Perez Memorial Scholarship to help pay his tuition. Murphy's great grandfather was also a Chicago police officer killed in the line of duty.

Perez was killed 12 years ago while conducting drug surveillance. His wife and three children were among those taking part in Thursday night's scholarship presentation and memorial.
