7 times 'Scandal' fans fell in love with Olivia and Fitz's romance

Fans of ''Scandal'' have fallen head over heels for the power couple that is Olivia Pope and Fitzgerald Grant III. (ABC)

To anyone who hasn't seen Scandal, the idea of a love story between a married president and his trusted advisor might be hard to swallow. But over the past four seasons, creator Shonda Rhimes has worked her emotion-manipulating magic, and now fans of the show have fallen head over heels for the power couple that is Olivia Pope and Fitzgerald Grant III.

The finale left Olivia (Kerry Washington) and Ftiz (Tony Goldwyn) with their most definitive happy ending yet, and if our first glimpse at season five is any indication, fans of the once forbidden romance will get to keep on celebrating.

To get excited for what is sure to be a Liv-and-Fitz-centric premiere, take a look back at the moments that made you team Olitz in the first place.

When they both just need "one minute"
Episode 1X06, "The Trail"

If you're into the idea of these two together, chances are this is the episode where your love affair began. We flash back to presidential candidate Fitzgerald Grant: He's married to a woman that that would stoop so low as to fake a miscarriage to get into the White House, so Olivia is a refreshing romantic change of pace. Rather than a steamy sex scene, the romance begins with the pair taking one minute to stare into each other's eyes and forget everything else.

When they decided they were in this together
Episode 2X08: "Happy Birthday, Mr. President"

Put this down as the hottest scene involving the Constitution in the history of TV. One of the many things Fitz and Liv have in common is their love of country. After they both touch the Constitution, Olivia tells Fitz she loves him back.

When Fitz "earned" Olivia
Episode 2X22, "A Woman Scorned"

Olivia is Fitz's kryptonite -- even Mellie has said so. But with Fitz's powerful job, Olivia is the one who has to sacrifice, sometimes even getting summoned into the middle of the woods for secret meetings. In one of Shonda Rhimes' favorite lines, Olivia demands that Fitz prove their relationship is not one-sided: "If you want me, earn me!"

Fitz would go on to do just that later in the episode by letting Mellie tell the world that he was having an affair.

When Fitz showed Liv "Vermont"
Episode 3X08, "Vermont Is for Lovers, Too"

No one ever said Fitz and Olivia's relationship was simple. When Fitz shows Liv a house in Vermont that he had built for her and describes how he pictured them growing old together, "Vermont" becomes a symbol of the simple life that a president and the "other woman" will never be able to have.

When Olivia perfected Fitz's speech
Episode 4X02: "State of the Union"

Even when they're not on good terms, Olivia knows how to make Fitz go from good to great. She did it with his second State of the Union speech, when she encouraged Fitz to open up about how deeply Jerry's death affected him and Mellie.

When we learned the truth about Liv's ring
Episode 4X17, "Put A Ring on It"

Fans long searched for deeper significance to both the term "Sweet Baby" -- the pet name that revealed their relationship in the pilot -- and Olivia's ring, which she threw at Fitz after he went to war to save her. This season a connection between the two was finally revealed -- the name of Fitz's great grandmother's ring is "Sweet Baby." The president said that he hadn't known why he didn't give the ring to Mellie -- until he met Olivia. And Olitz fans everywhere begged Shonda to stop playing with our emotions.

When Olivia showed up at the White House...to stay
Episode 4X22, "You Can't Take Command"

We waited, and we waited, and we waited ... and, at last, the season four finale of Scandal delivered. In a show filled with tragic twists and terrifying turns, Liv and Ftiz's romantic reunion -- scored by the symbolically significant song "Here Comes the Sun" -- was a beautiful, unexpected and welcome moment of joy.

Will Fitz and Liv last? Tune into this season of Scandal, premiering Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. ET | 7 p.m. CT on ABC, to find out.
