Movies have the ability to transport audiences to new worlds and foreign locales. But have you ever considered taking a trip to some of these Oscar-worthy film destinations?
From sun-swept beaches in California and Miami to exotic destinations on the other side of the world, the settings of some of the films nominated this year for the Best Picture Oscar are definitely beckoning for you to visit.
Arrival
Location: Montana
There probably won't be any giant alien spacecrafts touching down in the Big Sky State, like there was in this 2016 sci-fi thriller. But with its breathtaking scenery and abundance of outdoor activities, Montana can feel like some beautiful, alien world.
Fences
Location: Pittsburgh
The setting of this August Wilson play-turned-film doesn't immediately jump out to travelers as a must-visit U.S. destination. But with its booming cultural scene and vibrant nightlife, Pittsburgh is one of the must-visit destinations in the northeast.
Hacksaw Ridge
Locations: Lynchburg, Va. and Okinawa, Japan
Lynchburg is a picturesque city with quaint, small-town vibes. Okinawa holds a place in history for the numerous battles that were fought there during World War II. Now, the Japanese beach locale is a commonly visited area for domestic and international tourists.
Hidden Figures
Location: Hampton, Va.
With a population of just over 130,000, Hampton isn't as big as other travel destinations on this list. But major history took place in this charming Virginia city, where women of color broke race barriers and contributed to the space program as depicted in Hidden Figures.
La La Land
Location: Los Angeles
The opening scene to La La Land showcases some of the city's notorious traffic. But the musical also depicts the pristine beaches and historic landmarks that compose the "City of Stars."
Lion
Locations: India and Australia
In Lion, Saroo travels across India before eventually being adopted by a couple in Australia. While impoverished in many areas, India is one of the most energetic and lively places in the world. And the vibrance of Melbourne and natural beauty of Tasmania makes the oceanic country a must-visit locale.
Manchester by the Sea
Location: Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.
The spirit of Massachusetts lives strongly in this picturesque seaside town. Casey Affleck's character is conflicted about relocating to Manchester-by-the-Sea in the Oscar-nominated film, but you won't have that problem when you visit the New England coastal community.
Moonlight
Location: Miami, Fla.
Moonlight showcases the hard life in an impoverished area of the Florida city. But Miami is immensely diverse, home to pristine beaches and a bustling nightlife.
