Mention high heels, and for many, "Sex and the City" protagonist Carrie Bradshaw strutting down a New York City sidewalk in her beloved sky-high Manolo Blahniks comes to mind. As it turns out, American women might be somewhat more practical when it comes to their choice in footwear, but heel heights do vary state to state.

Online luxury shopping site GILT.com decided to investigate which state's customers buy the highest heeled shoes. Their data revealed that those "Sex in the City" assumptions don't hold up - New Yorkers prefer relatively modest heels averaging just 2.09 inches. To find the truly high heels, one has to head down to Florida, where the average heel height is 2.46 inches. Nevada and Arkansas also ranked in the upper echelons of heel heights. But the title of "stiletto czar" belongs to Puerto Rico, where the average heel height is 2.87 inches.

Shoppers in Kansas, Nebraska and Maine prefer most modest heels, all averaging under 2 inches. And don't let visions of Hollywood starlets teetering down the red carpet fool you either, Californians averaged a very walkable 2.25 inches.

Data was based on the average heel height of shoes purchased between Jan. 2013 and June 2014.
