As the nation marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, thousands are gathering at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- As the nation marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, thousands gathered at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K at Soldier Field Saturday. ABC 7 is once again a media sponsor, and ABC 7's Roz Varon and Judy Hsu emceed the noncompetitive 3.1-mile (5K) walk, which raised $490,000 for the American Cancer Society.

During our ABC 7 Eyewitness News Saturday Morning, Roz interviewed Carrie Cihasky, event specialist for the American Cancer Society, Yvonne Cisco, breast cancer survivor and American Cancer Society volunteer, and Cynthera Penny, the director of the Chi-Town Line Dancers, live about the event. The dancers are top fundraisers at the walk every year, and they are doing the cool-down at this year's event.

There is already encouraging news: according to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer death rates decreased by 34 percent between 1990 and 2010 (the most recent year for which data are available).

About the American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers saving lives and fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society's efforts have contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the US since 1991, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Thanks to our progress, nearly 14 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year. We're determined to make this cancer's last century and finish the fight. We're finding cures as the nation's largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, ensuring people facing cancer have the help they need and continuing the fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more.

For more information, to get help, or to join the fight, call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.
