Commission formed to end healthcare disparities
CHICAGO (WLS) -- In April 2016, the American Medical Association is bringing health professional to Chicago to discuss ways to end inequality in healthcare. Recent studies have shown that despite steady improvements, racial and ethnic minorities experience lower quality care, are less likely to receive routine medical procedures, and have higher rates of morbidity and mortality than non-minorities. In an effort to turn the tide, The American Medical Association formed The Commission to End Health Care Disparities.
One of the doctors speaking at the meeting is Dr. Bonnie Mason, one of the few African American female orthopedic surgeons in the nation. She received the 2015 Diversity Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Mason is also the founder and Executive Director of the non-profit organization, Nth Dimensions, which helps and encourages women and minorities to follow their dreams to become doctors. Dr. Mason joined ABC 7 Eyewitness News to talk about healthcare disparity in the U.S. and how to change it.
