An apple a day keeps the doctor away. The same can be said about hugs.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon found frequently hugging it out with someone can protect you from illnesses like the cold.

No, there is no invisible shield that activates each time someone squeezes you. Rather, it's a support thing.

The authors of the study discovered people who receive a lot of hugs are usually around friends and relatives which in turn lowers your stress levels and prevents stress-related illnesses. Researchers found those people who did get sick had symptoms that were less severe and didn't last as long compared to people who don't get a lot of hugs.

"Either way, those who receive more hugs are somewhat more protected from infection," Psychology professor Sheldon Cohen said.

"If you have good friends and family around you, you actually heal quicker," added Dr. Seema Yasmin.

So next time you get the sniffles, snuggle away.
