National Wear Red Day
Heart disease is the number one leading cause of death in the U.S.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- February is American Heart Month. Heart disease is the number one leading cause of death in the U.S., causing one in three deaths among women each year.

But 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events can be prevented with education and action. Friday, Feb. 5 is National Wear Red Day to raise awareness for heart health.

Heart disease in women can differ from men. Heart attacks symptoms can even be different, with women not experiencing chest pain but jaw pain instead.

Dr. Marion Hofmann-Bowman, a cardiologist at the University of Chicago Medicine, joined ABC 7 to talk about the risk factors and preventative measures for heart disease.
