Red Cross holds summer blood drive
A blood drive will be held on Wednesday at Brookfield Zoo's Discovery Center.

Blood donations in the summer tend to drop because people are simply too busy to donate. Unfortunately, those in need cannot take a break from a potentially lifesaving blood transfusion.

Fran Edwardson, CEO of the American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois stopped by the ABC7 studio Saturday to talk about an upcoming blood drive at Brookfield Zoo's Discovery Center. The Red Cross, Brookfield Zoo and ABC 7 Eyewitness News are teaming up to make sure hospital patients have the products they need this summer.

The blood drive will be held on Wednesday, August 5. In addition to possibly saving a life, all pre-registered donors will receive free zoo admission on the day of the drive. The admission is for one adult and up to two children, and includes free parking in the Discovery Center parking lot. The deadline to pre-register is Tuesday, August 4. Interested donors must make an appointment by downloading the Red Cross app or by visiting their website.

Date: August 5

Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
