Smoking has been linked to cancer and heart disease - and now researchers say lighting up leads to a higher risk of developing diabetes.

An international team of researchers looked at 88 previous studies. They found that smoking is linked to a 37 percent higher risk of developing diabetes.

For those who smoke heavily, that risk jumps to 57 percent. Researchers say the risk extends to family members, exposed to second hand smoke.

Those who stop smoking can bring the risk now to levels nearly the same as non-smokers.
