Think twice before you add hand sanitizers to your child's back-to-school shopping list.

A new study says alcohol- based gels offer no protection against sick days.

Researchers in New Zealand compared children between five and eleven years old. They were all educated in hand washing and hygiene, and half of them used hand sanitizer place in their classrooms.

It turns out sick days were about the same over a 5-month period.

So, according to the study, hand sanitizer in classrooms was no better than just teaching them to wash their hands.
