A couple bought a home in Maryland only to discover it was infested with snakes.

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- A Maryland couple says their new home had something extra they didn't pay for: tons of snakes.

Jeff and Jody Brooks recently bought the home, but when they began to move inside, they found snakes living in the walls and ceilings, ABC affiliate WMAR-TV reports.

The family moved into a relative's house and called exterminators. Crews then went into the house and began removing walls, ceilings and most of the insulation from the home.

The family has spent nearly $60,000 so far trying to remove the snakes from the home.

"Financial ruin, devastating. You never wish this on anybody," Jeff Brooks told WMAR-TV.

The snakes are black rat snakes which are among the most abundant snakes in Maryland.

The couple is now suing the former owner and real estate agent for misleading them about the snake-infested house.
